Marine Deputy Applications Are Now Being Accepted Through April 7, 2017

The Berrien County Sheriff's Office Marine Division has re-opened the application process for Marine Deputies for the 2017 boating season.

  • Application deadline is April 7, 2017. (Must be received in Berrien County Personnel office by April 7, 2017.)
  • This is a temporary/seasonal position. New deputies will begin training on the weekends in April. Patrols will begin with the Memorial Day holiday and end with the Labor Day holiday.

Applications (PDF) can be downloaded from the Berrien County website, or picked up from the County Administration Personnel Office. All  applications must be returned to Personnel.

Requirements

 Must be 18 years of age and out of high school at least one year prior to the start of the boating season. Must be able to pass a complete background check, and swim test. Able to work well with others. Prior boating knowledge and a mechanical aptitude, computer skills along with written and verbal communication skills desired.

Hours

Hours are based on a 40-hour work week, and is weather dependent.  Deputies will be required to work weekends with holidays mandatory.

Duties

Under the supervision of the Marine Lieutenant and/or Marine Sergeant, responsibilities include enforcement of the Marine Safety Act on Lake Michigan as well as the many inland lakes and rivers within Berrien County.  Deputies will be responsible for proper maintenance on boats, engines, trailers and vehicles, and caring for all County issued gear and equipment.
