About Us

The Berrien County Health Department (BCHD) was established as a local health department in 1964 and with a mission “to prevent disease, prolong life, protect the health of the community, and promote an optimal quality of life for the citizens of Berrien County.” This mission is achieved through the continual evaluation of community-wide health needs, particularly where vulnerability exists; through the development of comprehensive population-based health policies, both personal and environmental; and through diligent collaboration and cooperation with all healthcare organizations and the community to provide health services. BCHD strives to attain its goal through three major service areas, including Clinical and Community Health Services, Environmental Health Services, and Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Services.

Clinical and Community Health Services

Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening, Children’s Special Health Care Services, Family Planning, Hearing and Vision Screening, HIV Services, Immunizations, Public Health Nursing, Nurse-Family Partnership Program, STD Clinic, WIC, TB testing and treatment.

Environmental Health Services

Inspection and/or Licensing of Restaurants, Public Swimming Pools, Child and Adult Foster Care Facilities, Campgrounds, Public Bathing Beaches, Well Installation, On-Site Sewage Disposal System, and Septic Tank Pumpers. They also provide Indoor Air Quality/Radon testing, Home Mortgage Evaluations, Ground Water Testing, Subdivision of Land/Plat Approval, Lead Poisoning/Housing Inspection, and Animal/Insect-borne Disease Control.

Substance Abuse Prevention Services

Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Prevention Programs; and Drinking Driver Education Classes.
