Community Health Initiatives

The Berrien County Health Department leads and participates in a variety of community health initiatives that focus on public health disparities and health issues. The Health Department supports innovative efforts to bring nutritious foods and safe physical activity opportunities to communities across Berrien County. We believe that a healthy communities provide environments that support the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of all those who life, work, learn, and play there. Our community health initiatives take a prevention-driven approach to health, supporting policies and environmental changes that promote healthy eating, active living, the reduction of health inequalities, and strong families.

Health Equity is achieved when every person has the opportunity to attain his or her full health potential and no one is disadvantaged from achieving this potential because of social position or other socially determined circumstances. Health disparities or inequities, are types of unfair health differences closely linked with social, economic or environmental disadvantages that adversely affect groups of people.

Be Healthy Berrien is a county-wide partnership working together to reduce obesity and chronic illness, and increase overall health and wellness.
